Ball screw systems represent low friction drive elements, and are used to convert rotational motion into linear motion. They can also be used to convert torque into axial alternating action and are therefore applied in hydraulic and pneumatic power transmission systems.
The system consists of a screw and a nut loaded with spheres. These balls roll between the corresponding helical grooves in the screw and nut. The ball screws guarantee high precision of movement and remarkable rigidity to support even heavy loads, as well as high rotation speeds.

Each screw has a descriptive name, e.g. SFU1204: The first three letters identify the type of nut-screw and its bushing to match, the first two digits the diameter the last two the pitch, and then from these then the relative advance for each model is derived. Here is a summary table:
