Shaft supports are the components that secure linear shafts to the machine structure. Without suitable supports, even the most precise shaft cannot guarantee smooth and aligned movement. At DHM-online you will find different types for every need.
SK shaft supports
SK supports are the most common and versatile. They have an open C-shape with a clamping screw that locks the shaft. Fixing to the base is done with two screws. Advantages: easy to fit and remove, allow shaft position adjustment, economical. Limitations: the grip on the shaft is not complete (open on one side), less rigid than closed brackets.
Most common sizes: SK8 for 8 mm shafts, SK10 for 10 mm, SK12 for 12 mm, SK16 for 16 mm, SK20 for 20 mm.
SHF (shaft holder flanged) mounts
SHF holders are flanged holders with full grip on the shaft (closed ring). The shaft is inserted laterally and locked with a screw. The circular flange with fixing holes allows wall or plate mounting. Advantages: stiffer grip than SK, versatile mounting (horizontal, vertical, wall). Ideal for axes where support rigidity is critical.
KP supports (pillow block)
KP (or UCP) housings integrate a ball bearing inside a housing. They are designed for rotating shafts, not linear shafts. They find application in trapezoidal or recirculating screw systems, where the screw shaft rotates in the bearings while the nut moves linearly.
How to choose
For linear shafts with bushings (3D printers, CNC): SK or SHF supports. For trapezoidal or recirculating screw ends: KP supports or dedicated support units (BK/BF). For structures where rigidity is critical: prefer SHF or double SKs with close spacing.
Mounting tips
Align the supports carefully: even minimal misalignment causes friction and wear. Use a flat mounting surface (or shim the supports to compensate). Tighten the clamping screws on the shaft with the correct force: too little and the shaft slides, too much and the surface deforms. For CNC, mount the supports on a ground plate for best alignment.
